Have you ever seen a coffeeshop inside a former police station? Well, that’s exactly what you can expect at The Bulldog Ex-Police Station. You can try our products in the same place where for years the Amsterdam police put people behind bars. Even Henk de Vries himself has spent the night here after yet another police raid. Luckily our experienced staff are a lot more welcoming than the previous owners.
The Bulldog Ex-Police Station opened its doors on April Fools’ Day 1985 and that’s no coincidence. Henk wanted to play a prank on the authorities and shock them by setting up a coffeeshop in the former police headquarters. You still won’t have to look far to find left-overs from the building’s previous life. The highlight are the cells, which we’ve transformed into cozy booths to sit with your friends. But that’s not all.
Take a look at the walls to see how many (in)famous gangsters you can recognize and take a picture with our mannequin dressed up in an old police uniform. Once you sit behind bars on the old cell benches or our iconic cow-leather seats, the coffeeshop feels like a living room rather than a police station. No longer a place of frustration and boredom, but one of relaxation and cheer!

Henk planned the opening of the Ex-Police Station coffeeshop on April Fools’ Day 1985, together with our Grand Café The Bulldog Palace. It was intended as the ultimate prank on the Amsterdam police department to open a coffeeshop inside their former headquarters.
